  History

A brief history of our agency is described here.

LCFS Founder, The Reverend Bechtold. Arrayed in full clerical dress, including a shovel hat, Dr. Bechtold carried the baby - wrapped in a clean, sweet smelling, blue blanket - on a long street car ride to her new Lutheran home. This event in 1921 was the unforgettable journey that caused him to think about and plan for the future of the Lutheran Children's Bureau.

The agency was founded in 1922 by the Lutheran Church in Philadelphia in order to provide child placement services on the church's behalf. It was part of the local church unit, the "Synod," until 1965, when it incorporated as the Lutheran Children's Bureau.

The name was changed in 1970 to Lutheran Children and Family Service. Until 1975, LCFS was to serve the Synod covering all of Eastern Pennsylvania, but assets were divided in that year when the Synod was split in two. Now we are primarily related to the local, Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
